Bali’s north eastern coast has long been on divers radars and the area is now world renowned for its diving options. The drive to these sites can be just as interesting as the dives themselves, passing through local villages, rice terraces, and the daily lives of the Balinese. With shipwrecks, macro life, black sand beaches and most of the time calm and easy dive conditions this part of Bali’s underwater world is definitely worth seeing.
Why Tulamben?
One of Bali’s “first” dive sites, the Liberty wreck continues to provide memorable dive experiences for divers of all levels. Torpedoed in 1942, the ship was initially beached at Tulamben where it remained onshore for over 20 years until it slipped into the shallows during the 1963 eruption of Gunung Agung.
Since that time a multitude of coral species have created an artificial reef and home to many species of fish. This site is accessed from the shore and after a short swim over the black volcanic sands and dancing garden eels, divers are presented with an unforgettable sight. Sea fans, sponges, anemones, and soft corals cover the wreck providing a backdrop for a multitude of reef fish and other marine species.
Although a lot of the wreck does not resemble its former self, sections are still recognizable and some of the larger swim throughs offer stunning scenes as the light penetrates through the many holes and cracks.
